Pull Testing of Chemical, Chemset, and Epoxy Anchors After Drill, Clean, Inject, and Cure
Drill and epoxy testing is pull-out proof testing of chemical anchors after the hole has been drilled, cleaned, injected, and the rod or rebar has cured. Trades call it a chemset pull test, a Hilti pull test, or a drill-and-epoxy test. The engineering name is proof load testing of a bonded post-installed anchor. The physical job is the same: apply a controlled axial load, hold it, and record whether the installed bond holds.
The responsible engineer needs site evidence, not catalogue assumptions, to confirm whether the installed or proposed anchor arrangement is fit for purpose.
Why drill-and-epoxy jobs fail even when the resin is correct
Chemical anchors are sensitive to workmanship. Dust left in the bore, a wet hole with the wrong mortar, a short injection, a meandering hole, or a rod loaded before full cure will all reduce capacity. A visual check of the nut and washer does not find those defects. A load-only pass can also miss progressive bond failure. That is why ATA records displacement as well as load on chemical jobs where the brief allows it.
What a pull test actually checks
The proof load is taken from the project specification, typically 1.5 times the serviceability load under VicRoads Section 680, or from BS 8539 Annex B.3. The load is held for at least 30 seconds and must not drop more than 10%. Failed anchors are documented with load at failure and failure mode so the engineer can decide whether the defect is isolated or a batch problem.
Independent of Hilti, Ramset, Fischer, and the installer
Hilti, Ramset, Fischer, ICCONS, Würth, Sika, Chemset, and Dewalt products are all tested on the same terms. ATA does not sell resin and does not install rods. Manufacturer onsite testing covers that manufacturer's product. Independent testing covers the installed connection the building will actually use.

Is drill and epoxy testing the same as proof load testing?
Yes. Drill and epoxy is the trade name for installing a chemical or adhesive anchor: drill the hole, clean it, inject resin or set a capsule, and insert the rod. The test that follows is a proof load or pull-out test of that installed anchor. ATA uses the trade name on this page because that is what site supervisors search and ask for.
Can Hilti test our Hilti epoxy anchors?
Hilti offers paid onsite testing of Hilti products. That is useful product support. It is not independent of the supplier. If the ITP or the engineer requires a third-party tester, or if the job uses more than one brand, ATA is the independent party. We test Hilti, Ramset, Fischer, and every other chemical system on the same brief.
How soon after injecting epoxy can you pull-test?
After the manufacturer's full cure time for the product, hole diameter, and ambient temperature. Testing early produces false failures and can damage a correctly installed anchor. Send the product data sheet with the booking so the test window is set before we mobilise.
Do you need the holes cleaned to a particular method?
The installer must follow the product method statement: typically blow, brush, blow, or vacuum, in a dry hole unless the mortar is rated for wet holes. ATA tests what is in the wall. Poor cleaning is one of the most common reasons a chemical anchor fails a proof load. The report will say so when the failure mode shows it.
What proof load is used on a chemset pull test?
The load comes from the specifying engineer or the project standard, not from ATA inventing a number on the day. VicRoads Section 680 uses 1.5 times the serviceability load. BS 8539 Annex B.3 uses a fraction of characteristic resistance. If no brief exists, ATA can derive one under the design advisory programme before testing starts.
